Vietnam
An event for March 20th is planned for the Youth Theatre in Ha Noi, Vietnam: Let's Reserve all the best things for children.
Greece
Our board has given a lot of thought to what we should do on March 20th.
The idea was to organize something that would be useful not only in drawing attention to the importance of Theatre for Children in general , but also by focusing on the specific problems where help is needed, either by the government or by private enterprise and individuals. So we finally decided that - apart from what the companies will do in order to celebrate this day in their own theatres or their own towns - we should do something that would draw attention on these problems on a national scale.
We have secured already the collaboration of a major newspaper and a first rate TV program. We hope to involve at least one more TV program as well as other newspapers, radio broadcasts, etc. The idea is to try to involve in the discussions people who are in a position to help. Members of the government (we hope), critics, journalists, teachers, sponsors, etc. And of course, theatre people working for children.
We would like to draw attention to:
a) financial problems
b) lack of information and critical appreciation
c) more responsible choice of the productions presented to schools
d) need for more active involvement of teachers
e) ways to bring theatre to children in parts of the country that are
difficult to reach
f) ways to help in rising the artistic level of scripts and productions
We do not know how well we shall succeed in bringing forth all these problems on March 20th and what could come out of it , but it is worth trying.
We know that these problems are similar in most countries. And we are sure that in some of them there have been initiatives - national or private - that have proven effective in dealing with them. If a Centre can think of any such initiative we would be very grateful to know about it. If we receive a message with a description of it, we could use it in discussions and interviews as an example of what can be done. It could be very helpful and we should all make the most of the opportunity offered by the first Theatre for Children World day.
New Zealand
Christchurch is going to have an informative practical workshop for students and invited guests on Sunday the 18th of March. There will also be a presentation on the 20th with media coverage.
Brazil
1) Poster created by Ziraldo about the international day for the theatre for children and young people (he`s an important Brazilian cartoonist and author of drawings and texts for children).
2) There will be two series of phone cards, the first of 16 units honoring many well known personalities, authors and puppets; the second will feature 14 cards and will be a special honor to the 50 years of Tablado, directed by Maria Clara Machado, with pictures and posters of the plays, among them, Pluft o Fantasminha, text translated and produced in more than 20 countries. In total, it will be 6 million units to be distributed during the whole year 2001.
3) We`ll be sending a letter to all local and state deputies and authorities from Rio and São Paulo, also to the federal senators and ministers in Brasília, comunicating the creation of the International Day. Here in Rio the deputy Heloneida Studart will officially comunicate to the Deputy Chamber the creation of the day.
4) For the first time CBTIJ has sealed a contract of plays presentation with SESC - Serviço Social do Comércio, to present in 12 theatres in Rio and interior of the state, This project will begin on March 11th, going through the year until October 14. It`s also part of our celebrations.
5) We have a company that will be giving us the support to promote this event in newspapers, radios and TVs.

The "International Directors' Seminar" of 2001 will take place in Nürnberg (Nuremberg) in southern part Germany, in co-operation with the "Theater Mummpitz" and the "Kinder- und Jugendtheaterzentrum in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland". The "International Directors' Seminar" can already look back
on a long history: it had been organised by the ASSITEJ of GDR thirteen times already, and, since the unification of the two German sections of ASSITEJ in 1991, there have been five Seminars. In 2001, the Directors' Seminar once again will work on a specific theme, of interest to all cultural areas: "Fear and Hope. Staging the Reality of Today's Children".
This Directors' Seminar which is designed for about 20 participants shall take a thorough look at the fact that our social reality has been changing rapidly over the years. New fears as well as new hopes have been emerging. And not only among the grown-ups. Each generation of children has it's unique view on reality. How can the changing and changed image of reality be staged?
ASSITEJ International gave the title ASSITEJ WORLD PROJECT to the 2001
Director's Seminar.

6th German Children's and Youth Theatre Meeting
Dates & place: May 5-10, 2001, Berlin
Seeing performances, meetings colleagues, making friends, meeting kids and youngsters from Berlin, exchanging impressions. This is how one could describe "Augenblick mal!", the German Children's and Young People's Theatre Meeting.
This festival unites outstanding performances from German children's and youth theatres and European top performances.
The three members of the independent jury took a close look at the German children's and youth theatre landscape. They collected their impressions and depicted a portrait of this landscape which outlines its contours and profile. Ten artistically remarkable performances will be the focal point of the German Children's and Young People's Theatre Meeting, which takes place in Berlin every two years.
In addition to the ten German productions the 6th German Children's and Young People's Theatre Meeting offers an extraordinary international focus: the European Schoolyard Stories. The school-yard is a meeting place where, every day again, young, growing adolescents tell their own story, discuss their problems, secrets and discoveries and share their sorrows and joys. Do youngsters growing up in Europe ask themselves the same questions or do their own histories and cultural backgrounds determine the development of their identity? Six first performances from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, and Germany will form a unique cycle of more than five hours of theatre for ages 11 and up.
Seminars and forum discussions accompany the festival which will welcome about 6.000 younger and older spectators. The time table will be released in mid February.

Iranian Marionette Theatre and the New Journeys of Mobarak
By: Chista Yasrebi
Inst. for the Intellectual Dev. of Children & Young adults
Among Iranian traditional theatre, Kheyme- shab- bazi, a kind of marionette theatre, is of special importance. In this puppet-play, which is mainly produced for the very young, comparative and symbolic ways are used to convey a message, to show the nature of puppet play, its utility in a traditional society as well as focusing on the necessity of art . The only property in this play is a box which is placed in front of the audience. The master or the puppeteer hides himself behind the box; strings are attached to the marionettes and by pulling the strings, the puppeteer makes them move. Sometimes glove puppets are used. While manipulating the puppets, the master talks through a whistle in his mouth as if the puppets are talking. His words are usually not comprehensible for the audience, therefore, he repeats whatever the marionette says for the crowd to let them understand. In this way, the marionette comes to life and transfers his message to children.
Thus the structure of kheymehshab-bazi resembles to puppet theatre, that is to make the marionettes come to life and to translate their language into what we consider necessary to be told to children.
Kheyme-shab-bazi is mainly based on a character named Mobarak. He is a funny, honest, critical, and naïve boy, who, on the whole, has a pleasant character. He never hesitates to express himself. His frankness together with his childish vigor helps him to bear-up with whatever he encounters. His honesty makes people love him despite his silly appearance and behavior. Mobarak is a symbol of Iranian traditional puppet theatre. He is a naughty child who seeks good faith and truth wherever he goes. He is not dismayed by difficult situations; nor is he deceived by tricks people play on him; he reacts against all of these by his funny action.
Today is the beginning of a new era for Mobarak, the puppet of kheymehshab-bazi; he tries to build up an interface between tradition and modern life and to make children face with their problems and know their real needs. Mobarak is now critical to all the things against the children; he wants the parents and the adolescents to respect children's rights throughout the world, and to provide a happy peaceful life as well as possibility of education for them.
In today's communication era, Mobarak, like every one else, seeks information in order to find new ways to communicate with the children.
Therefore, he travels around the world to participate in various theatre festivals. The tour of Mobarak is a symbol of active theatre for children and the restless and lively nature of children in the modern era.
A play called
'Kh, like Kheymehshab-bazi' is now on rehearsal at kanoon.
